Botox (BOTOX®), formally known as botulinum toxin, is a highly popular anti-aging treatment that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox works by relaxing the facial muscles, allowing the skin to smooth itself out. Botox was the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in the country in 2022 and 2023, with over 9.48 million injections performed, and its popularity continues today. (1)

About Botox

Botox is a neuromodulator, which means it inhibits the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to limit muscle contractions. This is the neurotransmitter responsible for muscle movements; as it is inhibited, wrinkles and fine lines are smoothed out. (2) When administered, Botox relaxes the muscles to not only reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but also prevents new ones from forming.

Benefits

Patients who receive Botox can enjoy numerous benefits, which include:

  • Wrinkle Reduction: One of the primary reasons patients pursue Botox is to lessen the appearance of forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, and other visible signs of aging.
  • Non-Surgical Treatment: Unlike surgical intervention, Botox does not require incisions or lengthy recovery times, making it an attractive option for many individuals.
  • Quick Treatment Sessions: Each session takes approximately 10-15 minutes to perform, meaning patients can easily fit their appointment into their schedules, even on the busiest of days.
  • Minimal Discomfort: Most patients report little discomfort during their injections, often comparing the sensation to a small pinch.
  • Natural-Looking Results: Botox allows patients to maintain their natural expressions while reducing their creases and wrinkles.
  • Preventative Benefits: Starting regular Botox injections at a younger age for ‘prerejuvenation’ can prevent deeper wrinkles from forming.

Ideal Candidates for Botox

Suitable candidates for Botox include anyone interested in reducing or softening the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, creases, crow’s feet, and other signs of aging throughout the face. Younger patients interested in early anti-aging treatments or reducing the early development of wrinkles as a form of ‘prejuvenation’ may also make suitable candidates.

All candidates interested in Botox should be in good overall health and free from any underlying medical conditions that may impact the results of the procedure. It is also important that realistic expectations are held regarding what this procedure can accomplish. This procedure is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with keloidal scarring, or those with certain neuromuscular disorders. If you do not qualify for this treatment, we still encourage you to schedule a consultation so that our team may find a suitable alternative

Personal Consultation

If you are receiving Botox for the first time, you will be asked to attend a personal consultation at our San Marcos or Menifee locations. During this consultation, our nurse injector will meet with you to learn more about your medical history, concerns, and desired results. A facial evaluation will also take place. Once the injector has enough information, your treatment plan will be crafted. You will receive preparation and recovery instructions from our nurse injector, as well as the cost estimate for your Botox. We accept walk-in appointments for Botox; however, you can save 10% off your Botox treatment if you pre-book online!

Preparation

Since Botox is a minimally invasive procedure, there is minimal preparation needed beforehand. However, you may need to stop taking medications and supplements that contain blood-thinning properties. Alcohol should also be avoided before and after the treatment. Additionally, individuals will need to modify their skincare routine to avoid harsher skincare products, such as retinoids or exfoliants. On the day of the treatment itself, you should arrive with a clean face, free from any makeup or skincare products.

Procedure

Upon arrival, your skin will be cleansed and sanitized. The nurse injector will use a skin-safe marker to identify the target muscles. A fine needle is used to precisely inject Botox into targeted facial muscles. Your treatment session will be very quick, lasting less than 15 minutes total. The nurse injector specifically administers the formula to the facial muscles responsible for the development of fine lines and wrinkles, diminishing their appearance while simultaneously preventing new ones from forming.

Recovery

Following each appointment, you will be free to return to your schedule. However, physical exercise or high-impact activities should be avoided for several hours. You may experience some mild redness, tenderness, or swelling at the injection sites. These effects are temporary and will dissipate on their own within a few hours after the appointment.

Results

You may be able to start seeing the results of Botox after a few days, but the full effects will become more apparent after approximately one week. You can enjoy a more refreshed and rejuvenated appearance as the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and creases is reduced and the skin smooths itself out. You will be able to enjoy your youthful-looking appearance for three to four months before it is recommended to return for a follow-up treatment. (3) However, personal and lifestyle factors can affect the longevity of treatment.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a gel-like substance that is administered beneath the skin to restore and enhance volume in various parts of the face. We offer Juvederm, a portfolio of FDA-approved dermal fillers composed of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found within the body that is known for being deeply hydrating. (4) Individuals can have any of the following fillers administered, depending on the area of the face being addressed:

  • Juvederm Volbella XC: Juvederm Volbella XC is specifically formulated to help augment the lips and fill in perioral lines, also known as “smoker’s lines.” This filler is a lighter-weight gel that contains Vycross technology so that it moves more easily with one’s facial expressions.
  • Juvederm Vollure XC: Juvederm Vollure XC is designed to address facial lines and wrinkles, such as the nasolabial folds or smile lines. This filler is primarily used to address concerns in the lower face and can last for up to 18 months.
  • Juvederm Voluma XC: Juvederm Voluma XC is administered to the mid-face to restore volume to the cheeks and jawline. This formula is the thickest and densest of the three to enhance the lift and structure of the cheekbones.

Dermal fillers are often combined with Botox injections to help patients achieve stunning results.
